Family letter update and LOTS of pics from this past week

Our son Beckam was born last month, and if you were to ask us a couple months ago about what was going on, we probably would have said something about how were just sort of getting ready for Beckam to show up. He was born the 15th of May, and now that he's come, if you were to ask about what's going on, we're going to tell you something about how we're spending our time taking care of Beckam. He's a fantastic baby, and it's such a beautiful experience having a new spirit enter your home, but the not-so-beautiful 8,000-times-per-day diaper changes are still happening, and the middle-of-the-night feedings are still happening (you're amazing Mel), and...well that's about it. This little boy is pretty amazing.

The reality, however, is that while Beckam is sort of the daily main event in our lives, he's by no means all that has been going on.

Speaking of pretty amazing boys, Jaden and Kyler keep us busy too. We've been talking a lot about Kyler lately, since he's been experimenting more and more with boundaries. The thing about Kyler is that he doesn't really seem to have any sort of sense of consequence - yet. For good, he'll do just about anything. He's fun to watch as he experiments and tries new things, because there are a lot of new things he tries. For the bad, he'll do just about anything. Sometimes it's crazy to hear the stuff that comes out of his mouth or to watch the way he just sort of bulls his way through people whether they're asking him to stop or threatening him with his life (OK, so we haven't seen that one yet). He’s a great kid. He's got a strong will, and he's very strong physically (really, the kid should play rugby), and he's also a sweetheart. He's a charmer. He's the boy that will melt you in an instant with a smile, and if we turned around tomorrow to find Kyler holding hands with some cute 3 or 4 year-old little girl, it wouldn't be the first time. Kyler seems to be doing very well with the idea of being booted out of the baby spot in the family.

Jaden finished Kindergarten in May, and he's kept us busy as we've tried to be part of his soccer and t-ball games and practices. It's been a treat to hear him come home from school and speak excitedly about what he learned. He stuns us as he puts together simple math problems as he's walking around the house, he's got a big vocabulary, and he gets excited about learning - and playing too. He's a phenomenal athlete. He takes to just about any sport quickly, and some of them he's just a little stunning to watch. He'll come home from soccer practice and ask if Dad will come out and kick the ball with him for a while longer, and that's after already staying at practice to run and kick the ball around with anybody that will stay longer to play with him. He just wants to run and play, and he especially enjoys it if hegets to kick hard, hit hard or run fast. During soccer this season, Jaden was blowing everybody away with his big left foot, and his speed until he played a game against a friend who was lots better at dribbling than him. The other little boy dribbled circles around Jaden's team for a a few minutes until Jaden realized what was happening and shut his friend down with some pretty amazing defense. Then he went home and all he could talk about was how this other boy dribbled, and he wanted to learn. It didn't take much to twist Christian's arm for some extra lessons, and by the next game Jaden was running circles around all the other boys. It's always fun to see our boys being the stars of the show, but it's especially fun to see them finding spaces that they enjoy challenging themselves and growing up.

As we mentioned in our last email, Christian is back full-time at BYU getting his MBA, and we've decided that it makes sense for him to go on and get a PhD. That means that he's at BYU this Summer working with a few professors on research and a couple other projects like preparing for the GRE exam (for PhD programs that require it). He also has a professor who challenged him to read some classic works in economics literature by David Ricardo, Adam Smith, and Alfred Marshall. He's enjoying the books, but 3,000 pages of 18th century academic English has been a considerable mountain to climb. Christian is working on two research projects related to business in developing markets and another helping a BYU professor finish up a book on innovation. He just returned from a trip to San Diego to present the paper he's writing with one of the professors at an academic conference organized by the Strategic Management Society. He was really excited both to present the paper and mingle with some other big names in academia, and also that the conference was honoring C.K. Prahalad, the late University of Michigan professor who wrote a book ("The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid" for those interested) Christian read a couple years ago that was a powerful catalyst for Christian's interest in working with developing markets. The work has been exciting, very demanding, and so far all valuable. We'll see how it all pans out after applications go out this fall, but the hope is that all of this will give him some good experience working in the academic space and also with professors who will hopefully give him good recommendations to go with his applications. Beyond the long hours preparing for PhD programs, Christian really enjoyed taking Jaden to soccer practices and even got to coach the team for one game.

We could sum up Mel's work for the last month or so by saying, "See above about Beckam, Jaden and Kyler," but that wouldn't really do justice to how creative she is and some of the other fun things she does. Mel is a phenomenal cook, and she has all sorts of healthy recipes that she's put together on a "Good Food" recipe blog, which we mentioned in our last family email too. The blog has given her all sorts of opportunities to both share the creativity she has with food and also much of what she's learned about healthy eating. It's also been exciting for her to find how many people are interested in healthy eating too. Mel is also the person behind the vast majority of our family blog, and she spends a lot of time making sure that our family's adventures are recorded there. A couple years ago Mel started putting all of each year's-worth of posts into books, and we just received the 2009 book. Those family journals have become real treasures for us.

We're really lucky to be in this adventure period right now. Our family keeps us busy, and Christian's school is pushing us into some new paths, but we feel very safe, and we've already witnessed the Lord's hand guiding us many times, and so this is becoming an exciting crossroads for us, and we can't wait to see what else is in store. Here's to a great rest of the summer.

All the best to all of you.

Mel, Christian, Jaden, Kyler, Beckam

Jaden with his coach on the last day of outdoor soccer!  She just kept saying how amazing Jaden was and that the foot and eye coordination he has just isn't normal.  She is sad she won't be his coach again next year! (Jaden seems to know he's good too, because he said to me after the game "The other team can't even score when I am playing!"  And he's right!)

Kyler was so lucky to get the treats once in a while too!
We are LOVING this warmer weather! Finally!!  The boys had some friends over the other day.  I think we played in the water everyday last week!

 Apparently this was the jail!

Beckam is getting used to the brightness of outside...even in the shade.

They had a blast!  It's amazing how much fun boys can have with a kiddie pool and squirt guns!
Beckam has been smiling for a while now.  But we are finally catching some on film!

Saturday we went to the Lehi Grand Parade in celebration of Round-up days here in Lehi.

Becakm is a good sport.  Even if it's not his favorite thing, he wouldn't really let you know. He's pretty easy going.

We could only stay for about an hour then had to head to Jaden's baseball game.  Here he is playing as catcher.

Then Saturday night we headed to Salt Lake to celebrate my grandmas 89th birthday! She LOVES going to Sugarhouse park to feed the birds.

 Oh...aren't we....uh....cute! :)
Jaden got to help the clown with a rope magic trick too.  He thought that was pretty fun.

 Beckam, again, was fantastic!

The boys sure love their baby brother.  Every morning Jaden asks if he can hold Beckam.  So here they are holding him while watching cartoons Sunday morning.

And as you can see....Beckam is loving it all!

Rock Canyon Park

This last week we had a day in the upper 80's!  So we HAD to head to Rock Canyon Park for more playing in the water.  My friend Jenni joined me with her kids too!
My friend Carly was there as well and brought a toy to share!  They all loved floating down the little "river."

This is such a typical face for Kyler.  Tongue out means he's having fun! :)
When we were all done and packed up we saw what looked like a big bug fly into Beckam's stroller.  I figured it would find it's way out by the time we got to the van.  But while we were just getting to the freeway Jaden screamed SO loud "like a girl."  He said there was a HUGE spider in the car.  Well, there was nothing I could do about it while I was driving, but he saw it going back and forth along the floor of the carpet the whole drive home.  When we got into the driveway it only took a second for the big bug to make it's way out.  It was  quickly smashed!  Jaden was so relieved.  Kyler was crying in the backseat, scared to get out.  So, here's the HUGE bug!  Pretty yucky.  Glad it didn't ever hurt Beckam either!

Beckam is 1 Month Old!

Just imagine I am holding a microphone and let me tell you about myself!...
Today I am 1 month old!  Already in just a month I have learned so much.  I can almost hold my head up by myself, and have even smiled a couple of times, especially more often in the last week.  I have pulled my own hair at least 3 times and am a professional pooper. (My parents will probably go bankrupt on buying me diapers.)  I make some silly sounds and silly faces, at least that's what my brothers say. :)  I am a great eater and sleeper too.  Last night was my best night so far!  I ate at 7:30pm and hung out with Mom until about 9:00pm then it was off to bed and I slept until 2:30am!  I am a very happy baby, and everyone LOVES me!

Don't I look excited to be 1 month old!

Sometimes I am even too tired to wake up for a photoshoot.  Yeah, life is pretty good!

A Whole week with Oma

My mother-in-law came to visit/ help out for the week, and boy was it fantastic!  (I don't know that the boys will think that I am fun ever again. :) )
She came over Sunday morning and held the fort down here so that I was able to go to sacrament meeting, which was fantastic.
Monday she took the boys and met up with their cousin Maddix to go to a cooking class.  They made cheesy bread and Hawaiian fruit bread.  They have both always enjoyed cooking with me, so I wasn't surprised that they loved it.  Jaden also decided he wanted to be a helper in making some of daddy's snacks for the week.  He spent about a half hour very carefully "painting" the bread.

Like father, like son.  Look at how careful and concentrated he is!

Tuesday we headed down to Rock Canyon Park.  Yes, even I went!  The snow run-off is coming through the park and the boys LOVED playing in the freezing snow water and squirting each other.

I just couldn't help getting this picture!  Nice Ky!

Tuesday night Jaden had baseball practice and Shenna took him to that.  Wednesday they played at Kangaroo Zoo and that night he had soccer practice.  Thursday morning Daddy left to San Diego for the weekend to present a paper for the professor he's been doing research for. Shenna also made lots of time for holding Beckam!  This was a favorite position!  He seemed to really like having his arm around hers!  So cute!
The boys excitement about their cooking class continued and they wanted to make me dinner Thursday.  So, with Oma's help, they made Bubble Salad, Pigs in a Blanket and Ants on a Log.  A good meal to have when dad isn't home :)

And they were so excited to show me!  Kind of a crazy dinner, but glad they had fun making it!

After dinner Jaden had a baseball game and after that Oma took the boys to play at McDonalds and get a hot fudge sundae!  Yeah, she spoils them!
One of the days I laid Beckam on the Boppy to relax and he just kicked and pushed with his feet so much, I thought he was going to "climb" right over it.
The boys both loved helping to give Beckam a bath.

Kyler wanted to pick out the outfit for him after his bath.
Friday Shenna took them to the Dinosaur Museum, and Saturday she took Jaden to his soccer game.  Sunday I took Beckam to church for the first time and we stayed for Sacrament meeting.  Them Shenna stayed with the boys so that I could go home with Beckam and rest! (Which was AMAZING!)  Daddy's conference weekend went well and he got home Sunday night.  Monday morning Shenna took the boys to go feed the ducks at the pond in Provo.  But when they got there, the pond was drained and being worked on.  So they went to the Bean Museum instead at BYU.  Somehow in this crazy fun-filled week they also fit in a trip to Costco, JC Penny, story-time at the Library, and even a couple trips to Wendy's for a frosty!  WOW!  Monday night(last night) she left and with how much help and fun she has been while she's been here I haven't know how we are going to do everything without help.  Then I see this...
While watching cartoons, Jaden still took time to sit by Beckam and hold in his binky!  What a great helper!
Yeah, I think we're going to be okay.
